The Spanish Earth

The Spanish EarthJoris Ivens, 1937

Filmed in Spain during the Spanish Civil war. Narrated by Earnest Hemmingway, the Spanish Earth tells the story of Spains revolutionary struggle through the experience of a single village. Shot in 1937,when the Republican forces were on the retreat, the film is a graphic portrayal of the men and women who resisted Franco’s insurgents.
Alan Sennett of the Open University/University of Liverpool will speak to the issues raised in the film both political and aesthetic.
